Things to remember
For many years, I claimed that the Rivercafe logo was my first yacht logo. Then, during a move, I came across an old folder with some of my works. At design school, logo design wasn’t a particular subject, so I had forgotten that I had designed a yacht logo before. To be honest, it was more of a maritime logo. It was supposed to be developed for the Grimaldi shipping company. My professor at the time, Rolf Schulze, loved assigning his own projects to us, so he always had an entire class working on them. For us, it was a fantastic opportunity—real-world requirements are often very different from what you imagine in your designer’s dreams.
So, Grimaldi. By the way, I still like the logo today. It’s balanced and has a clear style. Of course, styles change over time, as do tastes—otherwise, Mercedes wouldn’t have any reason to constantly update their logo at great expense to keep it state-of-the-art.
My logo was never used or printed.
Anyway, I did end up remembering. The logo was supposed to work especially well in a single-color version, as that’s how it would appear on ships and containers. I even found one of my initial sketches. And even though I’ve always been sure that there’s no specific style to be found in my work—since I design constructed, handwritten, and pure typographic logos alike—I do remember other „firsts“ much more vividly. For example, my first pair of glasses, my first bikini, and my first Barbie. Oh, that Barbie had a wardrobe full of clothes! That’s how I ended up using my mother’s sewing machine many times.
I look forward to your reactions and emails.
Thank you for today,
Ka Binz
